How do you move lamps correctly?

Lamps give your rooms atmosphere and ensure optimal lighting. This article is about what happens to the lamps when you rearrange or redecorate at home? How do you correct your lighting concept and relocate the lamp correctly?

Each room in your home has a different function. While you spend most of your day in the living room and kitchen, the bathroom and bedroom are your place of peace and relaxation. Have you now set yourself up again and your lamps are no longer hanging in the right place? Maybe you're just moving into a new house and the place where the old lamps were hanging doesn't fit with your planned decor.

To ensure that there is a perfect atmosphere and optimal lighting conditions in your rooms, we will show you how to move your lamps correctly.

If you want to move a lamp and hang it up and place it in a different location, the electronic connections must be converted and the lamp dismantled. Of course, you could entrust this task to an experienced electrician. But with the high hourly wages and travel costs, this can quickly become expensive. A competent electrician is recommended for the new installation of electronic connections. Moving an existing connection shouldn't be a problem even for hobby craftsmen.

With the right tools and good preparation, you can move your lamp to the desired location. To disassemble and install your lamp you will need:

  • a voltage tester,
  • a screwdriver,
  • if necessary, a cordless drill with various attachments,
  • a wire stripper,
  • cable connector,
  • a ladder for all ceiling lamps and wall lights
  • and instructions for changing the bulbs and lamp.

Before you start dismantling the lamp, make sure you have all tools ready and read the instructions to avoid damage.

Ceiling lamps need stability and space

Before moving a lamp, be sure that the location you choose provides the best lighting and proper support. Larger lamps such as chandeliers are sometimes very heavy and require a tight screw connection. The existing ceiling must therefore be stable enough and load-bearing. Imposing lamps take up the room and illuminate it generously. Voluminous chandeliers are suitable for larger rooms such as the living room or an entrance hall. These lamps are characteristic and an absolute eye-catcher. In rooms that are too small, the light would be far too strong and the room would appear oppressive.

You can move delicate wall lights or smaller pendant lights flexibly. Pendant lights need an appropriate height so that no one bumps into them. The beam of light falls so that the desired area is illuminated with the appropriate brightness. When making new connections, always make sure that the walls are suitable for installing a lamp and that you do not hit existing power lines or damage water-carrying lines when laying cables. There is usually a wiring plan for every house and every apartment. So be on the safe side and study this plan in detail before moving a lamp.

Moving your lamp step by step

The first and most important step is to protect you from electrical accidents. So turn off the power first! Check your home fuse box to make sure live wires are turned off. With the voltage tester you can be sure that no more current flows. If you have difficulty finding the correct fuse, turn the lamp on if necessary and disconnect each circuit until the lamp is off. Once you have found the appropriate line, label it and turn off the corresponding circuit. Do not restore power until you have finished installing the lamp!

Dismantling the lamp

Then disassemble the lamp by removing the holder and all removable parts. These include, for example, light bulbs, the lampshade and glass covers. Decorative elements such as a canopy usually cover all exposed parts of the lamp.

Then expose the wiring. The protective cover is usually attached with a small screw. If the lamp is particularly heavy, for example because it is a lavish chandelier, you should ask someone for help so that the lamp does not fall down. Imposing and delicate chandeliers consist of many special individual parts and are a beautiful eye-catcher in the center of a room. Warning: They are also easily breakable!

In our lamp shop there are new lamps in modern and classic designs. They consist of dreamy pendant lights or sophisticated crystals. Be particularly careful here because some individual parts can be very delicate.

After removing the panel, you should be able to see the lamp's wiring. There are 3 different cable colors. Check the wires with the voltage tester to make sure there is no power left. Make a written note of the connections and take a photo so that you can reinstall the connections correctly later. Carefully unscrew the caps or connectors and disconnect the light fixture's wiring from the ceiling. If the wiring seems too complicated, seek advice from your trusted electrician or read the lamp instructions carefully again.

Moving the lamp and reconnecting it

After you have disconnected all cables, you can take the lamp down. To move the lamp to its new location, it is important to know how low it will hang. A dining table lamp above a new table may need to be installed at a new height. If the lamp is installed above the new dining area, a height of 30 to 34 centimeters is always comfortable for you and your guests.

Chandeliers and pendant lights also look different in your new space. Now you need to cut and strip the cables. It is best to leave eight to ten centimeters in addition to the hanging length for the new connection later. Cut the wires and use the wire strippers to remove an inch of the jacket from each wire.

If you want to move the lamp to its new location, you will need to reconnect the cables. Connect the cables to the colors via the circuit board. To connect them, twist the lighting and ceiling wire wires together and enclose the connections with the ceiling flap. The ground wire, which is often green/yellow, is connected to either a ground screw on the ground bar or to a special copper wire that comes from the circuit from the ceiling or wall. If you only see a small green screw, connect the cable there. There are always valuable tips in the instructions.

To make the lamp light up in your new place, connect the ends of the cables again to the power box and use the assembly instructions. After assembling the lamp, reinsert the bulbs or bulbs into the lamp. Only when the offset lamp is fully attached and connected do you turn the power back on. If the light does not work, turn off the power again and use the voltage tester to check all connections. A connection has probably been made incorrectly.

Connect the offset lamp to the Smart Lightning system

Many households are already taking advantage of the advantages of the digital world. All lamps are linked to a smart lighting system that can control the lights completely automatically and on a mobile basis. Motion sensors, timers, timers and dimmers ensure the perfect lighting conditions at any hour and in any season. This saves electricity and costs and is also very convenient.

If you want to move a lamp to another location, it should of course be integrated back into the existing system. In the lamp shop you will find a suitable lamp for every room and every furnishing style, which can be easily connected to the existing Smart Lightning system. Once you have reinstalled the lamp and added it to the circuit, the Smart Lightning system automatically recognizes the lamp and you can program it according to your wishes and switch it on and off while you are on the move. If the system displays an error message, you can contact support and possibly check the connections again.

Conclusion

Moving lamps will make your home shine in a new light. In any case, always consider your personal safety when moving hanging lamps, wall lights, pendant lights and chandeliers. This means you can continue to enjoy your existing lamps. While realignment can be time-consuming, the end result is usually worth it.
