Amount of light: How bright should dimmable LED spots be?

The amount of light required depends on the size of the room, wall colors, ceiling height, usage and personal preference. Dark surfaces absorb significantly more light than white walls. A room with an oak floor, a dark kitchen and matt walls therefore needs more lumens than a bright room with white surfaces.

A simple rough calculation is: room area in square meters multiplied by the desired lux gives the required luminous flux in lumens. Avoid spots directly above sitting positions, beds or frequent lines of sight. A spot above the sofa can be blinding when you lean back.
