How do you move lamps correctly?

Lamps add atmosphere to your rooms and provide optimum lighting. This article is about what happens to the lamps when you rearrange or refurnish your home? How do you adjust your lighting concept and relocate the lamp correctly?

Every room in your home has a different function. While you spend most of the day in the living room and kitchen, the bathroom and bedroom are your place of rest and relaxation. Have you now redecorated and your lamps are no longer in the right place? Perhaps you are just moving into a new house and the place where the old lamps were hanging doesn't fit in with your planned furnishings.

To create the perfect atmosphere and optimum lighting conditions in your rooms, we will show you how to move your lamps correctly.

View each lamp individually

For well-being and high-quality lighting, you will find timeless, stylish and extravagant wall lights, pendant lights, table lamps and Floor lamps from exclusive designers in the online lamp store at BUYnBLUE .

If you want to move a lamp and hang and place it in a different location, the electronic connections must also be converted and the lamp dismantled. Of course, you could entrust an experienced electrician with this task. But with the high hourly rates and travel costs, this can quickly become expensive. A competent electrician is recommended for the new installation of electronic connections. However, moving an existing connection should not be a problem even for hobby craftsmen.

With the right tools and good preparation, you can move your lamp to the desired location. You will need the following to remove and install your lamp:

  • a voltage tester,
  • a screwdriver,
  • If necessary, a cordless drill with various attachments,
  • a wire stripper,
  • Cable connector,
  • a ladder for all ceiling lamps and wall lights
  • and instructions for changing the bulb and lamp.

Before you start dismantling the lamp, make sure you have all the tools to hand and read the instructions to avoid damage.

Ceiling lamps need stability and space

Before you move a lamp, you should be sure that the chosen location offers the best lighting and the right support. Larger lamps such as chandeliers are sometimes very heavy and require a fixed screw connection. The existing ceiling must therefore be stable enough to support them. Imposing lamps take up the room and illuminate it generously. Voluminous chandeliers are suitable for larger rooms such as the living room or an entrance hall. These lamps are characteristic and an absolute eye-catcher. In rooms that are too small, the incidence of light would be far too strong and the room would appear overwhelming.

You can move delicate wall lights or smaller pendant lights flexibly. Pendant luminaires require an appropriate height so that nobody bumps into them. The beam of light falls in such a way that the desired area is illuminated with the appropriate brightness. When making new connections, always make sure that the walls are suitable for installing a lamp and that you do not hit any existing power lines or damage water-bearing pipes when laying cables. There is usually a wiring plan for every house and apartment. So play it safe and study this plan in detail before you move a lamp.

Moving your lamp step by step

The first and most important step protects you from electrical accidents. So turn off the power first! Check your fuse box in the house to make sure that the live cables are switched off. Use the voltage tester to make sure that no current is flowing. If you have difficulty finding the correct fuse, switch on the lamp if necessary and cut each circuit until the lamp is off. When you have found the correct wire, tag it and switch off the relevant circuit. Do not restore the power supply until you have finished installing the lamp!

Dismantling the lamp

Then dismantle the lamp by removing the holder and all removable parts. This includes, for example, light bulbs, the lampshade and glass covers. Decorative elements such as a canopy usually encase all exposed parts of the lamp.

Then expose the cabling. The protective cover is usually attached with a small screw. If the lamp is particularly heavy, for example because it is a lavish chandelier, you should ask someone to help you so that the lamp does not fall down. Imposing and filigree chandeliers consist of many special individual parts and are a beautiful eye-catcher in the center of a room. Caution: They are also easily breakable!

Our lamp store offers new lamps in modern and classic designs. They consist of gorgeous pendant lights or sophisticated crystals. Be particularly careful here because some individual parts can be very delicate.

Once you have removed the cover, you should be able to see the wiring of the lamp. There are 3 different wire colors. Check the wires with the voltage tester to make sure that there is no current. Make a written note of the connections and take a photo so that you can reinstall the connections correctly later. Carefully unscrew the caps or plugs and disconnect the luminaire wiring from the ceiling. If the wiring seems too complicated, seek advice from your trusted electrician or read the lamp instructions again carefully.

Moving the lamp and reconnecting it

Once you have disconnected all the cables, you can take the lamp down. To move the lamp to its new location, it is important to know how low it will hang. A dining table lamp above a new table may need to be placed at a new height. If the lamp is placed above the new dining area, a height of 30 to 34 centimeters is always comfortable for you and your guests.

Chandeliers and pendant lights also look different in their new place. Now you need to cut and strip the cables. It is best to leave eight to ten centimeters in addition to the hanging length for the new connection later. Cut the wires and use the wire strippers to remove one centimeter of the sheathing from each wire.

If you want to move the lamp to its new location, you must reconnect the cables. Connect the cables to the colors via the circuit board. To connect them, twist the lighting and ceiling wires together and enclose the connections with the cover flap. The ground wire, which is often green/yellow, is connected either to a ground screw on the ground bar or to a special copper wire coming from the circuit from the ceiling or wall. If you only see a small green screw, connect the cable there. There are always valuable tips in the instructions.

To light up the lamp in its new location, reconnect the ends of the cables to the power box and use the installation instructions. Once the lamp has been fitted, replace the bulbs or light sources in the lamp. Only switch the power back on when the relocated lamp is fully fitted and connected. If the light does not work, switch the power off again and check all connections with the voltage tester. A connection has probably been connected incorrectly.

Connecting the offset lamp to the Smart Lightning System

Many households are already taking advantage of the digital world. All lamps are linked to a smart lighting system that can control the lights fully automatically and on the move. Motion sensors, time switches, timers and dimmers ensure the perfect lighting conditions at any time of day and in any season. This saves electricity and costs and is also very convenient.

If you want to move a lamp to another location, it should of course be integrated back into the existing system. In the lamp store, you will find a suitable lamp for every room and every style of furnishing that can be easily connected to the existing Smart Lightning System. Once you have refitted the lamp and added it to the circuit, the Smart Lightning System automatically recognizes the lamp and you can program it according to your wishes and switch it on and off remotely. If the system displays an error message, you can contact support and possibly check the connections again.

Conclusion

Moving lamps will make your home shine in a new light. Always ensure your personal safety when moving hanging lamps, wall lights, pendant lights and chandeliers. This way, you can continue to enjoy your existing lamps. Repositioning can be time-consuming, but the end result is usually worth it.

If you want to furnish your home from scratch and can use existing connections, you should choose the right lights from our online lamp store. If you have any questions about the lamps in our store, our friendly staff will be happy to help you at any time.
